x I  photograph everything, not always knowing why.....and not knowing how it might turn up in a photograph later.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Tom Lavin

To know me is to know my work.
Beyond that, my philosophies are interchangeable, depending on the subject matter. I don’t always know why I take a certain photograph.……something to do with my sub-conscious mind (another topic altogether). I’ve been doing montage work since the late 80’s, so I photograph everything, not always knowing why and not knowing how it might turn up in a photograph later.

Another way to know me is to know my heroes…….at least my photographic ones. Ansel Adams was dead by the time he became one of my heroes. It was through his book “The Negative” that I learned that I was a good printer, but I didn’t have much of an idea on how to make a good negative. I couldn’t thank him for teaching me, but some years later I did thank his wife, Virginia.

My Heroes of Photography

Jerry Uelsmann taught me to see beyond the visible.

Ruth Bernhardt taught me to include myself in my images.

Frederick Sommer taught me art has no boundaries.

Minor White taught me to see not just what an image is, but what else it is.

John Sexton taught me the best way to put it all on a sheet of paper.

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT or
WHY I CREATED THIS BODY OF WORK

Francis and Lucia have been close personal friends for more than 25 years. Lucia is a very fine and internationally renowned painter. Francis is a retired residential contractor who sculpts and paints when time permits.

On a visit to their home in 2000, Francis wanted to show me his latest work; the matter that might not have been their original intent.

By arrangement and re-arrangement I used the pieces of their creations to form yet a third artistic expression.

Once a year over the course of the next
4 years, I photographed the evolution of their work. Each year upon my return I would be excited to show them the prints from the previous year, and for me to photograph the annual progress of their work. I was given complete artistic freedom to render and interpret as I saw fit. The portfolio ended when they moved to another home in the fall of 2004, and most of the casts were destroyed.
