Since 1970, Photolab has been working with photographers and other artists to print and to showcase photography. As a company, we started out as a primarily black and white custom photo lab. Today, our traditional darkroom is booming as photographers use us for fine art exhibit printing. Our skilled techs have years of fine art experience that keeps the magic of silver photography alive and well!!

In 1993 we added fine art digital imaging services. In 2006 we have just added more new digital color equipment. Now we offer digital photos from film or from files on true photographic paper in sizes from wallet prints to 40" x 60" and larger too! We print fine art Giclee prints on fine art water color papers: Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, Hahnemuhle Satin, Epson Ultrasmooth Fine Art and Breathing Color Elegance. We update our paper list frequently so if you don't see what you like, please ask.

You can find us
in California's San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to walk-in customers, we also welcome clients from all of the United States, Canada and beyond,  via mail-order or digital file upload.

In the Midst of Things:
Street Photography 1988-2008

March 29 to May 17, 2008
Artist's reception Saturday April 26th
5 - 7pm in the Photolab Gallery

Q. How do you define street photography?

Genres in the arts are always problematic and clumsy. Street photography looks like it documents but it’s not “documentary” photography”. There may be portraits, but it’s not about portraiture. It may have narrative embedded in it, or it may involve urban or rural landscapes, but it can’t be distilled to those categories either.

MLK Mural Photographs
Photographer Camilo José Vergara
A Chilean born, NYC documentary photographer who has been photographing the urban landscape for over 30 years, Vergara is known for his technique of returning repeatedly to the same location to photograph the changes over time.

Martin Luther King Jr.1929 1968

PHOTO: CAMILLO JOSE VERGARA

The photographer describes his series: "Since 1977, I have been documenting images of  Dr. King that regularly appear along the commercial streets and alleys of such cities as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Camden, N.J., and Baltimore. Many of the murals portraying this civil rights leader are painted on the outside walls of liquor stores, auto-repair shops, fast food restaurants, mom and pop stores, and public housing projects. The majority are the work of sign painters and amateur artists. All of the statues and many of the murals I photographed are located on streets named after him."
