NYU Junior, Larisa Shaterian, exhibits portraits of Palestinians from behind the walls of the Occupied Territories
-- Berkeley’s Photolab Gallery exhibits
May 12, 2008 news facts n Event location: Photolab Gallery, 2235 Fifth Street, Berkeley, California USA 94710 n Venue hours: Monday – Friday, 9am to 6pm; Saturday 10:30 am to 2:30 pm; closed Sundays n Medium: Black and white silver gelatin photographs n Exhibit dates: May 31, 2008 through July 12, 2008 n Artist’s Reception: Saturday, May 31, 2008 Time: 6 to 8 pm Larisa Shaterian is a third year student at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study, where her individualized major is Imaging the Middle East. Her work, "Palestinian Girls at Home," was shown last spring in "Prima Apparere: a collective work by Gallatin photographers," a group show at NYU. Shaterian’s ability with the camera together with her facility in speaking colloquial Arabic, give us an intimate introduction into the lives of the Palestinians she has met. "Introductions" is a body of work begun this winter with Mohammed Farraj, a journalism student from Nablus. It intends to introduce the viewer to a few Palestinians. Like all first meetings, it is incomplete, because it takes a long time to properly get to know a person, however, although it is aware of the limits that photography, words, and geographical and political distance put on a relationship, this salutation hopes to be articulate. Please contact Andrea McLaughlin to arrange an interview and/or for additional quotes. about the photolab gallery
