New Workshop format for 2008

Are you an active photographer looking for supportive but honest feedback on your work? Need new direction or focus? Are you struggling to put together a body of work?

Apply now for our Portfolio workshop for photographers who want to develop a portfolio or refine an existing project.

First session begins Sunday April 13th in the Photolab Gallery. Space in this popular workshop is limited and requires the instructor's approval to join.

Joan Bobkoff, popular freelance photographer and photo instructor at Laney College, will lead the workshop.

Be inspired by other photographers whose work you will see critiqued. Get help with developing or improving your portfolio. Learn how to see, understand and talk about other photographers' work.

Come away with new ideas, clarified direction and renewed energy to continue your project or complete your portfolio or even to begin something new.

What to bring. Bring any work in any format to be reviewed. Details available from the instructor during the application process.

Photolab is located at 2235 Fifth Street in west Berkeley. There is plenty of parking on Sundays and several good breakfast and lunch restaurants within walking distance.

How-to guide
for submitting work

The Photolab Gallery shows work by eight to ten photographers per year. We are interested in showcasing work by artists working in every medium of photography. We look at new portfolios continuously. If you would like to be considered for exhibit, contact us to submit your portfolio using the guidelines below.

How to apply
Most photographers contact us by email to set up an portfolio review. Portfolios can also be submitted by mail in the form  of cds or dvds, slides.

Before applying, please read this page and the main gallery page. We suggest you visit the Gallery in person to get a feel for our space and style and take a look the current work on exhibit,


Portfolio Reviews
Portfolios are usually reviewed on Saturday mornings by appointment only. Please call or email Andrea McLaughlin to make an appointment.

What we're looking for
The Photolab Gallery exhibits photography in all its forms. Take a look at the exhibit archive for an idea of what we have shown in the past. We are looking for portfolios by photographers who have a solid body of work for a exhibit as a solo show on all three walls that comprise our gallery space.

Once a year we produce an a group show based around a single theme.

Gallery Services
The Gallery provides exhibiting artists with a professional display environment, design, production and distribution of the exhibit announcement cards, a wine and cheese reception for the artist and publicity including a web page featuring an interview with the exhibiting artist and a few images from the exhibit itself. We prepare and distribute a press release and mailing to our list. The photographer hangs his/her own show, and deals directly with potential buyers.

Fees and Commissions
The Photolab Gallery takes no commission on works sold, instead we charge a flat fee of $450.00 which covers some of the costs of the gallery services above.

We refer all buyers directly to the artist.

Shows run 6 weeks per artist.
