Cultural Memory:
Fine Art and Rough Art meet and Shake Hands
The Photolab Gallery announces an exhibit of black and white and
color pigment photographs, titled “Cultural Memory” by East Bay
photographer, Mary Ann Hayden.
The show will run from November 10 to December 28, 2007 at the
Photolab Gallery, 2235 Fifth Street in Berkeley.
The exhibit is open to the public, accessible and free of charge.
A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, November
10th, from 5 to 7 pm.
Photographer Mary Ann Hayden, also a painter, began doing
photography in 2001. An experienced and accomplished painter, Ms.
Hayden has exhibited work for over four decades, so photography
comes relatively recently for her. In her current exhibit, Cultural
Memory, we see an intriguing pairing of experience - both the
photographer’s and society’s: painting and photography, landscape
and graffiti, architecture and sculpture, and so on. She says: “The
image (pairs) in this show…have been conceived at the intersection
of historical necessity and cultural memory.”
Mary Ann Hayden has a BFA from
Washington University and, in
addition to many exhibitions across the United States, she has also
designed and printed letterpress books and one of a kind, limited
edition artist’s books represented in over a dozen university and
private collections in the US and in Europe. She is represented by
SFMOMA Artists' Gallery.
