The Photolab Gallery announces an exhibit of black and white
photography, titled “Artist Studio” by
Orinda photographer, Tom Lavin.
The show will run from December 30 to February 24, 2007 at the
Photolab Gallery, 2235 Fifth Street in Berkeley.
The exhibit is accessible, open to the public and free of charge.
Hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, Saturday 10:30 to 2:30 pm,
closed on Sundays.
A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, January 20th,
from 6 to 8 pm.
Photographer Tom Lavin, an Orinda architect, has created a portfolio
of elegant black and white photographs of the work of two artists, a
painter and a sculptor. Once a year for 4 years, Mr. Lavin
photographed and re-photographed the artists’ work as it evolved.
He says, “By arrangement and re-arrangement I used the pieces of
their creations to form yet a third artistic expression… I was given
complete artistic freedom to render and interpret as I saw fit.”
Artistic freedom explains, in part, what happens when you start with
the pregnant female human form, cast and sculpt its image,
photograph that, scan the negative and print the new image
digitally. With that many steps and manipulations, can nature be
transformed by sculpture and then by photography with its beauty
intact?
The Photolab Gallery thinks so.
We invite you to come and decide for yourself at this intriguing
exhibit.
The portfolio ended when the artists moved and most of their casts
were destroyed.
Tom Lavin studied with Jerry Uelsmann, John Sexton, Vilim Criz,
Pirkle Jones, Bruce Barnbaum, Jill Enfield, Huntington Witherall,
Ruth Bernhardt and others. He has been exhibiting and selling work
in California since 1997.
Mr. Lavin is a member of the Friends of Photography, the Berkeley
Camera Club and the Bay Area Photographers Collective.
