Digital "Photography Rocks" 101
2½ hour workshop
with
Joan Bobkoff $89.00
Are
you confused by all the bells & whistles hidden in your digital SLR
camera? Is reading the manual like deciphering an ancient text in
Aramaic?* Let Joan Bobkoff, freelance photographer and
photo instructor for over 20 years, demystify this computer cleverly
disguised as a camera.
Renowned at the Laney College Photo Department (where she has taught
for the last 9 years) for her Photography Rocks Songbook, Ms. Bobkoff
will both show and sing you concepts and details necessary to use your
digital camera to best effect.
Whether you are new to photography or have been shooting for a while,
this is the class you need to gain creative control and in-depth
understanding of its features. Learn the basics of the camera to produce
digital photographs. Topics include camera operation, shutter speed,
aperture, focal length, file formats and white balance. Learn to harness
the histogram for better exposures, correct color problems with
in-camera adjustments and dramatically improve the quality of your photo
images. SONGS INCLUDE
The Rapture of Capture
How Deep is Your Field?
Embrace Me My Sweet Embraceable Hue plus many more greatest hits.
Bring your camera and the manual to the workshop
and be prepared to shoot but don't worry, you won't have to sing! And yes, Ms. Bobkoff (bard of Digicam 101)
CAN translate this mystic text.
*Aramaic is a Semitic
language ancestral to both the Arabic and modern Hebrew alphabets.
This class will only be offered
once this session.
Session 1: Monday, February 27, 2012 7 to 9:30 pm

maximize the potential of both your camera and your skills.
After a quick review of basic camera operations, Joan Bobkoff is back
for more hands-on advanced topics: effective use of lenses, tripod, fill flash
and total flash, focus modes, metering modes and taking sharp digital
photos. We cover the basics of good composition.
The class ends with a discussion and demonstration of post processing
and imaging editing plus recommendations for software options. There
will be ample time to get your questions answered.
Bring your camera and the manual to the workshop & be prepared to shoo

once this session. Session 1: Wednesday, February 29, 2012,
7pm to 9:30pm
Introduction to the 4x5 View Camera &
Large Format Photography
with Edward Miller
$270.00
This
is a one day introduction to the operation and use of the 4x5 view camera
taught by Academy of Art instructor Ed Miller. Also great as a refresher
for an experienced user.
The view camera is still used as a professional camera and by
a growing number of fine art photographers.
Morning session includes hands on demonstrations of basic techniques
including
Depth of Field control, perspective control, camera operation and all
movements including rise, shift, tilt and fall. Students will have a chance to shoot some of the
black & white film we provide in
class.
In the afternoon, we'll take a look at the processed film and get feed back.
Requirements: you must bring your 4x5 view camera, tripod
and a few film holders. Plenty of black and white 4x5 sheet film and processing is included and will be
done on site.
Maximum class size: 6 students
This class will only be offered
once this session. Session 1: Sunday, March 11 2012,
10am to 3:30pm
Darkenss Revealed: Night and Low Light Photography
3 hour evening class with Joan Bobkoff
$145.00

Photographing
at night does not have to be a "shot in the dark."
Learn about special equipment and exposure techniques
used for low light photography. Then put these new techniques into
practice immediately in a mini field trip to the Berkeley Marina. You
can shoot with any type of camera but you should be familiar with your
camera and its basic operations (since it is hard to read a manual in
the dark!)
An optional follow up workshop may be
scheduled to review our field trip work and learn more advanced
techniques
This class will only be offered
once this session. Session 1: Sunday, March 4, 2012,
5:30 to 8:30pm
Matting and Framing for Travel Photographers
Special class for exhibitors in the Travel Photographers Meet Up Exhibit
2 hour class
on Sunday, February 19th
Kristin Satzman and Andrea McLaughlin
$95.00
Photolab’s matting and framing instructor, Kristin Satzman,
is available on Sunday, February 19th for a special 2 hour class on matting and framing photographs. The focus will be on matting, since that requires special tools and training
and assist with assembling frames.
Students need to bring the frame or frame kit they intend to use. We will supply mat board and backing board. Students will learn to cut their mat to fit their photograph,
complete a mounted, matted print and get help assembling their own frame
or frame kits and adding the wire on the back. This class is $95 per person.
First come, first served as space is limited.
This class will only be offered once this session
Session 1: Sunday, February 19, 2012 from

Keith Modenbach
from Walnut Creek, says:
"I had several years worth of black and
white work but I was never sure where it was going. Joan helped me pull
together a strong body of my work. She encouraged me to get professional
prints printed. I can't tell you what a difference that made.
It wasn't
long before I was exhibiting and selling work. Thank you Joan."
Brian Nelson
writes:
"My photography has
improved greatly since beginning to work
with Kristin Satzman. She
has taught me
through clear explanations
and demonstrations
a methodical approach to
achieve consistent results and better
control
over both exposure and printing techniques.
She has made
these concepts enjoyable to learn.
Kristin is an excellent teacher."
